Since I've been traveling down to many of the Southwestern states the past year, I've never seen so many Hispanics before. When I was in Phoenix, I must have been the only Asian person in the Walmart store. Texas has been very much of the same as well as some pocket areas in So Cal. I'm not too sure what to make of this immigration debate that's heated up the past few months.
Generally, there has been the idea that's been floated around to let a so-called "Amnesty" program let illegal immgrants that are in the US apply for citizenship if they've been in the country for 5+ years or so. There's the other side of the debate that doesn't want to see this happen, since they believe that awarding illegal behavior sends a bad sign and will encourage more illegals to try and cross the border. People have even gone to means such as Ranchers add ladders to border fences so that the illegals will stop cutting their fences (though illegals believe this is too good to be true when they find ladders that will actually help them get across, they think it's a trick and people are waiting to arrest them soon after). Some farmers have even electrified their fences to keep people from trying to get through, but they'll just find another way around.
The problem lies in how to deal with this issue. The border patrol budget is severly limited, and there's really no way to patrol the entire US/Mexico border. I think we have some of our priorities skewed when we seem to be dumping massive amounts of our money into Iraq and not really seeing many results. Wouldn't money be better spent securing our own borders, funding money for domestic emergencies to help prevent another Katrina?
I don't necessarily think that all the illegals should be deported, since our economy is so dependent on this cheap labor now and the cost to deport everyone would cause a huge ripple in our economy.
I'm really not sure how I feel about an "Amnesty" program for
immigrants. My parents came here to this country long ago through
legal means, and some of my relatives had to wait 7-10 years for their
chance to come over here. Why would we let people that have come here
illegally have it easier than those that have been waiting around for
almost a decade? Part of me somewhat feels sorry for these people, since they only want a better life, a better life for their kids. I'm torn between what to do on this, but all I know is that it seems unfair to let illegals become citizens before those that have applied through legal means and many are still waiting years later.
